December 11 - STMicroelectronics announced the official launch of its first STM32 microcontroller family with built-in NPU, the STM32N6, which has been available to selected customers since October 2023 and is now ready for mass availability.

Based on the 16nm FinFET process, the STM32N6 series MCUs are said to feature a 32-bit, up to 0.8GHz Arm Coretex-M55 CPU, the first to be supported by Arm Helium vector processing technology, and are equipped with a Neo-Chrom 2.5D GPU, 4.2Mb of embedded SRAM, and an H.264 encoder, hardware JPEG codec.

The STM32N6 series NPUs feature ST's first embedded Neural-ART NPU, which runs at 1GHz and delivers 0.6 Tops of AI power, enabling the STM32N6 to deliver up to 600 times the machine learning of previous high-end STM32 MCUs, and to meet the real-time neural network inference requirements of computer vision and audio applications. We are on the cusp of a major transformation at the edge of the smallest of edges,’ said Remi El-Ouazzane, President of the MCU, Digital IC and RF Products Group at STMicroelectronics. This transition involves AI models increasingly augmenting or replacing customer workloads. Currently, these models are used for tasks such as segmentation, classification and recognition; in the future, they will be used for new applications that have yet to be developed.

The STM32N6 is the first STM32 product to feature our Neural-ART Accelerator NPU. It will leverage a new version of our unique AI software ecosystem package. This marks the beginning of a long journey for the AI hardware-accelerated STM32, which will enable application and product innovation in ways that no other embedded processing solution can.
