Apple's own 5G baseband chip revealed: TSMC 3nm process, earliest on iPhone 16 series
The 5G modem chip, which Apple has invested heavily in developing, is expected to be introduced into the iPhone 16 series of handsets ahead of schedule next year.
On March 6, Taiwan's Business Times reported that the 5G modem chip, which Apple has invested a lot of resources in developing, is expected to be introduced into the iPhone 16 series of handsets next year ahead of schedule.
At present, the 5G modem chips used in Apple's iPhones are all sourced from Qualcomm. As previously reported, Qualcomm's CEO recently said at MWC 2023 that Apple may equip the iPhone 16 series with its own 5G modem chip, and the industry expects TSMC to take the 3nm foundry order.
According to the Taiwanese media, the supply chain said that Apple's in-house 5G modem chip, codenamed Ibiza, will use TSMC's 3nm process, while the supporting RF ICs will use TSMC's 7nm process, and the industry now expects it to be introduced to Apple's iPhone 16 series in 2024.
This means that TSMC will start trial production for Apple in the second half of this year at the earliest, and will gradually ramp up the volume in the first half of next year.
In addition, Apple's iPhone 14, which was launched in the second half of last year, is equipped with Qualcomm's 5G modem chip X65, which is manufactured using Samsung's 4nm process. The iPhone 15, which will be launched in the second half of this year, will be equipped with Qualcomm's next-generation 5G modem chip X70, which is expected to be delivered using TSMC's 4nm process.
