MediaTek demonstrates 5G NTN two-way satellite communication technology
MediaTek demonstrated 3GPP 5G Non-Terrestrial Network (NTN) technology to support two-way satellite communication applications for smartphones.
March 2 - MWC 2023 was held in Barcelona, Spain from February 27 to March 2. During the event, MediaTek showcased 3GPP 5G Non-Terrestrial Network (NTN) technology, which provides support for two-way satellite communication applications for smartphones.
MediaTek said that the first smartphones with MediaTek's satellite communication technology will also be launched, with more devices to follow this year. In addition, MediaTek will also share its next-generation 5G non-terrestrial network technology in anticipation of new devices that will support satellite communications in the future.
MediaTek officials have learned that MediaTek's MT6825, a standalone chipset based on the 3GPP NTN standard, can be integrated into flagship smartphones to provide a satellite communications experience. In the coming years, MediaTek's satellite communications portfolio will develop IoT-NTN and NR-NTN technologies based on the 3GPP 5G R17 standard. MediaTek's upcoming NR-NTN chipset will provide devices with higher connection rates for applications such as navigation and real-time communications.
The IoT-NTN solution is described as a standalone chipset design that makes it easy for device manufacturers to integrate bi-directional satellite communication technology into 5G and 4G devices such as smartphones. Unlike other non-standardised solutions, MediaTek uses the 3GPP R17 NTN open standard, eliminating the need for OEMs or operators to develop products for a specific single specification.
In addition to supporting the 3GPP R17 NTN standard, MediaTek says the MT6825 IoT-NTN chipset also offers a number of other features: it can connect to geosynchronous orbit (GEO) satellites for easy conversion to 3GPP NTN standard satellite networks; it allows devices to automatically receive information from satellites; it enables devices to have longer battery life and its highly integrated design helps accelerate time-to-market. The highly integrated design helps to speed up the time-to-market process.
