In the past year, the supply of mature process chips has been in short supply, and the wafer foundry quotation has also risen. Taking 8-inch wafers as an example, in 2021, the production capacity price of 8-inch wafer foundries will increase by 20~40%, 2022 At the beginning of the year, 8-inch fabs were still overwhelmed. It has even been reported in the industry that, in addition to signing long-term contracts, IC design factories have increased their prices by means of "bidding" in order to obtain the capacity of wafer foundries, setting a record for the longest continuous increase.
The mature process is mainly used to manufacture small and medium-capacity memory chips, analog chips, MCUs, power management (PMIC), analog-digital hybrids, sensors, and RF chips. New demand for new energy, 5G, AIoT and other chips is rapidly emerging, especially the demand for downstream panel driver chips (DDI), power management chips, MCU, automotive chips, etc. has soared, providing a strong impetus for mature processes:
1. Power management chip
Since the second half of 2020, the demand for downstream smart cars, industrial control, smart home appliances, and consumer electronics (especially fast-charging products) has grown rapidly, driving the rapid growth of the power management chip market. According to MarketWatch, the global power management chip market is expected to reach US$40.8 billion by 2025, with a compound annual growth rate of 6.86%.
2. LED driver chip
Under the epidemic, factors such as strong exports, the outbreak of emerging application scenarios, and the transfer of panel production capacity to China have jointly driven the high demand for LED driver chips.
3. MCU/SoC
In 2021, there will be a serious shortage of automotive chips, which cannot meet market demand, and this is the main position for mature manufacturing processes. Especially driven by applications such as epidemic prevention, security, industrial control, and IoT, the demand for MCUs has increased significantly. The popularity of 5G commercial applications and the rapid growth of smart homes, wearable devices, and various IoT devices have driven the explosion of SoC demand.
4. Power semiconductors
Power devices are one of the core electronic devices in the electronic control system of new energy vehicles. The power device consumption of new energy vehicles is more than 5 times that of traditional vehicles, contributing to the most important increment in the industry. In addition, industrial control and smart home appliances are also the core application scenarios of power devices. Since the second half of 2020, the continued prosperity of these two industries has further stimulated the demand for power devices.
