Qualcomms compact macro base station 5G RAN platform to meet the demand for simplified, high performance, cost effective and energy efficient infrastructure for the fast growing outdoor mobile and fixed wireless access (FWA).

9th December, Qualcomm Technologies has announced the launch of the Qualcomm Compact Macro Base Station 5G RAN platform to address the need for simplified, high-performance, cost-effective and energy-efficient infrastructure for the rapidly growing outdoor mobile and fixed wireless access (FWA). To meet the cost priority and coverage metrics required for wide-area millimetre wave coverage, the new platform combines the Qualcomm FSM 5G RAN platform for small base stations with a macro base station antenna module supporting 256 antenna units, delivering up to 60dBm equivalent omnidirectional radiated power (EIRP) and supporting spectrum up to 1GHz bandwidth. This combination combines a small base station platform for simplified design with a macro base station millimetre wave antenna array for high power, long range coverage, driving the development of new compact millimetre wave macro base stations at attractive prices.

Millimetre wave has great potential for outdoor wide-area 5G network deployment scenarios and addressing the total cost of ownership (TCO) challenge is critical to unlocking the potential of millimetre wave deployments. The new Qualcomm Compact Macro Base Station 5G RAN platform is designed to proactively address these challenges by providing long-range performance enhancements to compact macro base station products that more than double the coverage area compared to small base stations designed using Qualcomm's FSM 5G RAN platform, thereby significantly reducing the number of base stations required for wide-area coverage. In addition, by driving the evolution of the Qualcomm FSM 5G RAN platform for small base stations, this compact macro base station solution addresses the energy efficiency, size and cost complexity issues common to similar solutions, making deployment easier.


Notably, the solution is designed to drive the growth of millimetre wave infrastructure deployments by significantly reducing the challenges of providing wide area coverage and data capacity. Capable of reducing base station equipment costs by up to 50% over specific coverage areas compared to similar high power millimetre wave macro base station solutions, the features supported by the compact macro base station will play an important role in key use cases, including


Mobile scenarios: millimetre wave is extremely resilient to network congestion, making it ideal for delivering reliable, responsive and high-speed services to users, even in high-traffic outdoor urban areas. By reducing the infrastructure costs of high-performance outdoor millimetre wave base stations, mobile network operators are able to break through wireless performance more cost-effectively than ever before, ushering in a new era of connectivity experience. Fixed wireless access (wireless fibre): The number of locations such as homes, offices and coffee shops that can be connected by a single outdoor base station is a key aspect of fixed wireless access (FWA). With a high-value combination of long-range performance and cost efficiency, Qualcomm's compact macro base station 5G RAN platform meets a number of key KPIs to deliver high-capacity wireless broadband access to homes and businesses in urban, suburban and rural areas. In addition, Qualcomm Technologies is working with infrastructure customers to further bridge the digital divide by simplifying access to broadband in rural and unmet connectivity needs, and by supporting more home access networks with specific investments.


The new Qualcomm Compact Macro Base Station 5G RAN platform is expected to begin sampling to customers in the first quarter of 2023.
