Renesas Electronics today announced a new generation of automotive multi-domain converged system-on-chips (SoCs), the R-Car X5 series, where a single chip can simultaneously support multiple automotive functional domains for a wide range of in-vehicle applications, including Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS), in-vehicle infotainment systems (IVI) and gateway applications. The highly anticipated R-Car X5H SoC, the first in the R-Car X5 series, uses an advanced 3nm automotive-grade process with high integration and outstanding performance to drive OEMs and Tier 1 suppliers to transition to centralised Electronic Control Units (ECUs), simplifying the development process and creating future-proof system solutions. Thanks to its unique hardware isolation technology, the Renesas R-Car X5H SoC is one of the industry's first solutions to enable highly integrated and secure processing of multiple in-vehicle functional domains on a single chip. In addition, this new SoC offers the option to extend artificial intelligence (AI) and graphics processing performance through Chiplet technology.
As the most powerful member of the Gen 5 R-Car product family, the R-Car X5H tackles the growing complexity of Software Defined Vehicle (SDV) development, overcoming the challenges associated with optimising compute performance, power consumption, cost, hardware and software integration, while ensuring vehicle safety. Applications such as autonomous driving, IVI, and gateways are taken to the next level by tightly combining application processing, real-time processing, GPU and AI computing, large display capabilities, and sensor connectivity on a single chip.
The new SoC family achieves up to 400 TOPS of AI arithmetic and industry-excellent TOPS/W performance, while supporting up to 4 TFLOPS(note 1) of GPU processing power. It features a total of 32 Arm® Cortex®-A720AE CPU cores for application processing, delivering more than 1,000K DMIPS of CPU power. The products are also equipped with six Arm Cortex-R52 Dual Lockstep CPU cores to achieve more than 60K DMIPS of performance and support ASIL D functionality without the need for an external microcontroller (MCU). Manufactured on one of TSMC's most advanced process nodes, the SoCs achieve higher CPU performance while consuming 30-35% less power than products designed on the 5nm process node (Note 2). These energy-efficient features not only eliminate the need for additional cooling solutions and significantly reduce overall system costs, but also extend vehicle mileage.
