As a CMOS image sensor for vehicle cameras, ISX038 can process and output RAW images and YUV images through independent systems, leading the way.
SONY Corp. will introduce its new CMOS image sensor "ISX038" for in-car cameras. This product can output RAW image and YUV image through two separate systems, which is leading the way. The product is equipped with a self-developed image signal processor (ISP), which can process and output RAW images required by advanced driver assistance system (ADAS) and automatic driving system (AD) for detection and recognition of the external environment of the vehicle in a separate system, as well as YUV images for use by on-board equipment such as dashcam and AR camera. By expanding the use of a single camera, the on-board camera system can be simplified, saving space, reducing costs, and reducing power consumption.
With the continuous upgrading of advanced driver assistance systems and autonomous driving systems, and the pursuit of drivers for driving experience, the role of in-vehicle cameras is also becoming more diverse. However, the installation space of the car camera is limited, and it is difficult to increase the number of cameras without limitation, so the function of a single camera needs to be expanded.
As a CMOS image sensor for in-car cameras, the ISX038 can process and output RAW and YUV images through separate systems, leading the way. The ISX038 uses a stacked structure composed of a pixel chip and a logic chip (with a signal processing circuit), and the logic chip is equipped with a self-developed image signal processor (ISP). In this way, a camera can achieve two functions at the same time, not only can accurately detect and identify the outside of the car environment, but also as an in-vehicle infotainment device to assist the driver's visual observation. Compared to existing solutions that use multiple cameras or an ISP on top of the camera to output RAW and YUV images, this product not only simplifies the system, but also helps to save space, cost and power.
It is also compatible with EyeQTM6, Mobileye's system-on-chip (SoC) for advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) and autonomous driving (AD).
Main features:
• Leading-edge processing and output of RAW and YUV images via two separate systems
The ISX038 has a dedicated image signal processor (ISP) for RAW and YUV images, which can optimize the image quality according to the specific use, and output two different formats of images through two separate interfaces. By extending the capabilities of a single camera, you can build a space-saving, low-cost, low-power system compared to using multiple cameras or using an ISP on top of a camera.
• Wide dynamic range is also achieved when both HDR and LED flicker suppression are enabled
In the driving state, it is also necessary to accurately detect and identify targets in the environment with large differences in light and shade such as tunnel entrances and exits. As leds have been increasingly used in transportation facilities (such as traffic lights), this requires the on-board camera to be able to suppress LED flashing during HDR shooting. This product uses a self-developed pixel structure and exposure mode to improve the saturation illuminance range, and can achieve a wide dynamic range of 106dB when using HDR shooting and LED flicker suppression function (up to 130dB when dynamic range priority is set). This design also helps reduce motion artifacts created when photographing moving objects.
• Compatibility with existing SONY products
In terms of ADAS/AD related uses, the ISX038 is compatible with SONY's existing products, which have been adopted by several automakers, in terms of collecting driving data through the on-board camera, which is compatible with data collected by existing products. This will help automakers and their partners improve their development efficiency in ADAS and AD.
• Meet the quality requirements for vehicle use
The ISX038 will receive the "Level 2" certification of the "AEC-Q100" reliability test standard for in-vehicle applications before mass production. In addition, a development process conforming to the ISO 26262 functional safety standard for road vehicles has been adopted to ensure compliance with the requirements of the vehicle safety level "ASIL-B(D)". Improve the reliability of on-board camera systems.
