Coherent (NYSE: COHR), one of the global leaders in materials, networking and lasers, has introduced a new high-efficiency continuous wave (CW) distributed feedback (DFB) laser. These innovative laser families, designed for silicon photonic transceivers, represent a leap forward in indium phosphide (InP) laser technology.
Designed for use in the O-band (1310 nm region), the Coherent CW InP laser redefines the performance of silicon photon modulators for 800G and 1.6T optical transceivers. Optical transceivers are a core component of data transfer technology that is key to addressing the explosive demand for bandwidth in AI-driven data centers, which are widely adopting machine learning networks to process large amounts of data.
Unmatched performance, opening a new era of connectivity
Coherent CW lasers feature a proprietary low series resistance design that delivers energy efficiency approximately 15% higher than the current industry standard. This breakthrough addresses a key need to reduce power consumption in silicon photonic transceivers, providing customers with significant productivity benefits.
"Our new CW laser family for Silicon photonics is creating a wave of excitement among industry leaders." Dr. Kou-Wei Wang, Vice President of InP, said, "By reducing power consumption, we are solving one of the most pressing challenges facing customers today. With the upcoming expansion of our state-of-the-art 6-inch InP fab in Sherman, Texas by 2026, we expect five times the current capacity, a significant step up given the complexity of this material. As customer demand for InP lasers increases, we are committed to leading the market with our technology and supply chain capabilities."
A new standard in laser technology
The first product in this revolutionary laser family is a 70 mW 1310 nm laser designed to operate in a non-cooling, non-airtight environment at junction temperatures up to 85°C. Commercial deliveries of the laser will begin in September 2024. Coherent also plans to introduce higher power lasers that operate in a cooled environment in 2025, as well as lasers customized for CWDM wavelengths.
These lasers are not only efficient, but also robust. Due to the removal of aluminum from the active quantum well region, they provide excellent reliability.
