Diodes Corporation (Diodes) (Nasdaq: DIOD) introduced the new 12-channel constant current LED driver AL58221. The driver has 12 open-drain outputs rated at 24V, can input high-precision currents up to 60mA, and has a fast Transient Response. The typical value of LED current accuracy between channels is ±1%, and the voltage regulator output current tolerance is ±0.1%.

Operating at input voltages from 3V to 5.5V, the driver uses adaptive pulse density modulation (APDM) technology to help mitigate non-ideal IOUT distortion and increases the visual refresh rate to enhance performance. The driver can be used for indoor and outdoor LED video billboards and displays, variable message signs (VMS), architectural and decorative LED lighting systems and LCD backlighting.

The LED current of the AL58221 is set by three external resistors (for RGB main Settings), and the average output current of each channel can be individually programmed through a digital interface. The AL58221 features data clock inputs for 10MHz Double-Edge Triggered to reduce electromagnetic interference (EMI). The device's two-wire serial interface transfers grayscale data to a function control register that stores configuration information. It can control grayscale resolution and clock frequency, current output waveform selection, and internal latching function.

This driver uses APDM to improve visual refresh rates greater than 1000Hz for 16-bit grays and greater than 256kHz for 8-bit grays. This technology reduces stroboscopic activity and provides Bilateral Processing of the output current to reduce EMI. The AL58221 uses clock cycle recovery technology with pulse retiming to support longer distance connections. The AL58221's two-wire serial interface can also connect up to 1030 devices in series.

The AL58263 in the same LED driver family is a recently introduced 16-channel device with 16-bit pulse width modulation (PWM) grayscale dimming control for higher resolution and larger display panels.
