Second Generation (Gen 2) of AMD Versal AI Edge Series for Vision and Automotive
AMD introduced the second generation (Gen 2) of its Versal AI Edge family, a major advancement in edge computing.
On 12 September 2024, at Hot Chips 2024, AMD introduced the second generation (Gen 2) of its Versal AI Edge family, a major advancement in edge computing.
Designed for vision and automotive applications, the Versal AI Edge Gen 2 chips provide a full-stack solution from data preprocessing to inference to post-processing of results and are characterised by low latency. The technical features and application prospects of this new product and its importance in edge computing and automotive.
The AMD Versal AI Edge Gen 2 continues the core value proposition of its predecessor, which is to simplify system design and improve performance by replacing multiple chips with a single chip.
It is designed to provide an end-to-end workflow that can efficiently handle the entire process from data acquisition to final inference. This integrated approach is particularly suited to edge applications where low latency is critical, such as real-time image processing and autonomous driver assistance systems.
For the new generation, AMD has upgraded the Xilinx-derived AI engine with the introduction of AIE-ML v2, a second-generation AI engine-machine learning-that improves performance per watt.
The engine has significantly more computational power and supports more efficient INT8 and bfloat16 data format processing. Performance improvements extend beyond traditional numerical calculations to new memory formats and more efficient data processing paths to meet the increased hardware demands of modern AI models.
The AMD Versal AI Edge Gen 2 family of products also offers a variety of SKU options to suit different application needs.
