Nordic Semiconductor, the world's leading provider of low-power wireless iot connectivity solutions, announced the launch of its small, low-power system-level package (SiP) product nRF9151 and its companion nRF9151 Development Kit (DK).

The nRF9151 is a fully integrated, pre-certified SiP with an application MCU that can be used for a wide range of application development or as a standalone cellular modem. This simplifies the development and deployment of a wide range of scalable products across large-scale iot markets such as industrial automation, asset tracking, smart cities, smart metering, and smart agriculture. In addition, the country of origin of nRF9151 is not subject to U.S. tariffs.

nRF9151 provides a cost-effective, universal solution and is a major advancement in cellular iot technology. This comprehensive and compact solution includes hardware, software, cloud services, development tools and world-class support with a programmable application processor.

nRF9151 SiP main features

Like the earlier nRF9161, the nRF9151 supports 3GPP version 14 LTE-M/NB-IoT global coverage and DECT NR+. Compared to nRF9160 and nRF9161, the nRF9151 has unique features, such as significantly reducing the board area, resulting in a more compact product without compromising performance.

In addition to supporting a Level 3 power of 23 dBm, the nRF9151 also supports a Level 5 output power of 20 dBm. Thanks to its unique low-power design, the nRF9151's peak power consumption is reduced by 45%, thereby reducing the cost of battery-powered products. Future firmware versions of nRF9151 will also add non-terrestrial network (NTN) support.

The nRF9151 DK can be pre-loaded with free data SIM cards using Onomondo and Wireless Logic, making it an ideal starting point for cellular iot application development.

The DK comes pre-loaded with Nordic's serial LTE modem application that connects via AT commands, which also allows the nRF9151 to be used as a standalone cellular modem, simplifying integration with existing customer solutions. Developers can get started with additional firmware samples with the quick Start tool in Nordic cross-platform development software nRF Connect for Desktop.

Powerful cellular iot solutions increase supply chain resilience

The nRF9151 SiP includes a dedicated 64 MHz Arm Cortex-M33 application processor with 1 MB of flash memory and 256 KB of RAM, a multimode LTE-M/NB-IoT modem with GNSS, power management and RF front end, all designed by Nordic.

Nordic's nRF Connect SDK and nRF Cloud services support application design, and Nordic is also responsible for regulatory certification and carrier module pre-approval. Nordic has its own module /SiP and design environment to provide the support needed for long-life iot applications. Compared to the earlier nRF91 series, the nRF9151 increases the adaptability of the supply chain, enabling the creation of robust and durable applications with production lives of more than a decade.

The nRF9151 software and tools are compatible with nRF9160 and nRF9161 and fully supported by the nRF Cloud. nRF Cloud, Nordic's Cloud services platform optimized for corporate wireless devices, provides location services including assisted and predictive GNSS, single and multi-cell location, SSID Wi-Fi location, security services, and device management.
