September 5, Qualcomm CEO Cristiano Amon said in an interview with CNBC that Qualcomm is working with Samsung and Google to develop a mixed reality glasses connected to smartphones, which is a different solution than the Vison Pro headset released by Apple.
Last year, Google, Samsung and Qualcomm formed a partnership to develop mixed reality technology. Amon revealed some details of the project for the first time this time. ‘It's going to be a whole new product with a whole new experience,’ Amon said about the mixed reality partnership, ’but what I'm really hoping to get out of this partnership is for everyone who owns a mobile phone to go out and buy the accompanying glasses.’
Qualcomm has made mixed reality a focus of its business in an effort to diversify. The company has a chip called the Snapdragon AR1 Gen 1, designed for smart glasses.
Qualcomm has been emphasising that its various chips in smartphones and PCs allow AI applications to run on the device rather than being processed in the cloud over the internet. ‘AI will run on devices, it will run in the cloud, it will run on glasses, it will run on phones, but ultimately, there will be a whole new experience,’ Amon said.
Note that IDC expects to ship 9.7 million VR and AR headsets this year, well below the predicted figure of 1.23 billion smartphones. ‘I think we need to get to the point where the glasses are no different than wearing regular glasses or sunglasses so that we can achieve scale,’ Amon said.
Details of the three companies' collaborative projects remain scarce, with Samsung's mobile chief TM Roh saying in an interview this year that the company would announce a new “mixed reality platform” this year. It's likely to be a software product, but Roh declined to give further details.
