Qualcomm launches Snapdragon XR2+ platform to power next-generation MR and VR devices
Qualcomm announced its latest flagship XR platform, the first-generation Snapdragon XR2+ platform, to power the next generation of mixed reality (MR) and virtual reality (VR) devices with improved power and thermal performance.
Oct. 14 - Qualcomm recently announced the launch of its latest flagship XR platform - the first-generation Snapdragon XR2+ platform - to power next-generation mixed reality (MR) and virtual reality (VR) devices with improved power and thermal performance. The Snapdragon XR2 delivers a 50 percent increase in endurance and 30 percent improvement in cooling over the Snapdragon XR2 platform, enabling a richer immersive metaverse experience in a smaller, thinner device form factor.
The new platform configuration enables better cooling and delivers significant performance gains, with the platform delivering a 50% increase in endurance performance and a 30% increase in cooling performance. This enables the platform to support more concurrent multimedia processing and perception technologies to enable full-sensory interactions, such as creating lifelike expressions in the metaverse, without sacrificing the form factor of the device.
The Snapdragon XR2+ platform introduces a new image processing pipeline that enables sub-10 millisecond latency to enable a superior full-colour video see-through MR experience. The platform supports parallel perception technologies including head, gesture and grip tracking, 3D reconstruction and low latency video see-through. Seven parallel cameras support the integration of real and virtual worlds into a full MR experience through video perspective, precise motion tracking and automatic room map construction. At the same time, the platform's high pixel density enables PC-class virtual landscapes and the ability to support multiple sensors and cameras simultaneously, giving more realistic virtual characters with detailed facial expressions.
The Snapdragon XR platform has already enabled over 60 XR devices worldwide. A number of OEMs are already planning to launch commercial devices powered by the Snapdragon XR2 platform, which is expected to be available by the end of 2022. Meta Quest Pro is said to be the first product to use Snapdragon XR2 Gen 1.
