August 30th news, Beijing time early this morning, according to Bloomberg, citing sources familiar with the matter, NVIDIA is discussing participation in a new round of OpenAI financing, which will make OpenAI's valuation more than 100 billion U.S. dollars (Remarks: Currently about 713.188 billion yuan).
Apple and Microsoft are also in discussions to participate in the round. Bloomberg reported earlier that the round would be led by Thrive Capital, which is investing around $1 billion. If negotiations go well, it would mean that the three tech giants with the highest current market capitalisation are behind OpenAI. NVIDIA is discussing an investment of about $100 million, two people familiar with the matter said.
Microsoft is already the largest investor in OpenAI, with a stake of around $13 billion (currently around Rs 92,714 crore). Apple has also been linked to OpenAI, with the former integrating ChatGPT into its new suite of AI features, Apple Intelligence. However, Apple had planned to take an observer seat on OpenAI's board of directors alongside Microsoft, but that plan was cancelled in July.
NVIDIA provides key infrastructure for developing and running AI tools like ChatGPT. It is currently the largest manufacturer of ‘AI accelerators,’ with sales surging over the past two years.
OpenAI Chief Financial Officer Sarah Friar told employees in a memo Wednesday that the company is seeking new capital, according to people familiar with the matter, without giving specifics. OpenAI has been in discussions to raise capital at a valuation of $100 billion or more since last December.
