A recent industry research report by Juniper Research predicts that the Internet of Things (IoT) market will double by 2026, from $31 billion in 2022 to over $61 billion. Adoption is expected to be high in sectors such as agriculture, smart cities and manufacturing. Two factors, low-cost connectivity and low-cost devices, underpin these opportunities. These factors characterise the constrained device market, as memory and processor capacity limitations keep costs low and encourage mass market size.

Efficient data transfer is another element of low-cost computing. In the IoT space, this relies on data transfer protocols such as CoAP and MQTT. in addition to these protocols, designers are looking for ways to optimise the data payload, for example by sending only the necessary data. Other strategies include intelligent ways of transmitting data. This may mean avoiding data communication when values do not change from one sample to the next. Another approach is to delay transmission, e.g. in the case of non-time-critical communication. It is now possible to accumulate sensor readings and send them in an aggregated fashion or when the communication network is not congested. In order to put these ideas into practice, IoT developers and component providers need an agreed way of working to simplify messaging.
