Major storage vendors are racing to develop next-generation storage to cope with the explosion in data processing required for artificial intelligence (AI).
Samsung Electronics is leading the way with Compute Express Link (CXL) storage, a high-speed interconnect technology. It plans to start shipping in the second half of 2024, after which the market will take off.
CXL is an open standard for high-speed computing. Choi Jang-seok, executive director of Samsung's storage division, explained in July, ‘It's kind of like gluing wide roads together to allow large amounts of data to travel back and forth.’
The CXL module is made from stacked DRAM, a widely used memory chip used to temporarily store data. By connecting multiple semiconductor devices, such as graphics processing units (GPUs) and central processing units (CPUs), storage capacity can be increased up to 10 times per server compared to when CXL is not used.
Generative AI requires large amounts of training data and typically consumes 10 times more power than a Google search in answering user questions.
Tech companies are building large data servers to prepare for the increase in data volume. ‘Integrating CXL can help us grow our servers without expanding physical servers.’ Choi Jang-seok said.
Samsung is one of the first companies to develop CXL modules in 2021. In June this year, Samsung announced that it had built a CXL infrastructure certified by Red Hat, a major U.S. software company, as it entered the final stages of practical application research.
