NVIDIA today announced the availability of a 6G research platform that gives researchers a new way to develop the next phase of wireless technology.
Open, flexible and connected, the NVIDIA 6G Research Cloud Platform provides researchers with a comprehensive set of tools to advance the use of AI in radio access network (RAN) technologies. The platform enables organizations to accelerate the development of 6G technologies that will connect trillions of devices to cloud infrastructure, laying the foundation for a super-intelligent world based on self-driving cars, smart spaces, and a variety of extended reality and immersive educational experiences and collaborative robots.
The platform's first adopters and ecosystem partners include Ansys, Arm, ETH Zurich, Fujitsu, YesTech, Nokia, Northeastern University, Rohde & Schwarz, Samsung, SoftBank Corporation and Viavi.
With the dramatic increase in the number of connected devices and the emergence of new applications, 6G will require a significant increase in radio spectrum efficiency for wireless communications," said Ronnie Vasishta, senior vice president of telecommunications at NVIDIA. The key to achieving this is to leverage AI, software-defined full RAN reference stacks and next-generation digital twins."
The NVIDIA 6G Research Cloud Platform consists of three components:
● NVIDIA Aerial Omniverse Digital Twin for 6G: A reference application and developer example that enables physically accurate simulation of complete 6G systems from single towers to city-scale. It integrates a software-defined RAN and user device simulator with realistic terrain and object attributes. With the Omniverse Aerial digital twin, researchers will be able to simulate and build base station algorithms based on location-specific data and improve transmission efficiency by training models in real-time.
● NVIDIA Aerial CUDA-accelerated radio access network: a software-defined, all-RAN protocol stack that gives researchers great flexibility to customize, program and test 6G networks in real-time.
● NVIDIA Sionna Neural Radio Framework: This framework seamlessly integrates with leading frameworks such as PyTorch and TensorFlow, utilizing NVIDIA GPUs to generate, acquire massive amounts of data and train AI and machine learning (ML) models. The framework also includes NVIDIA Sionna, the leading link-level research tool for AI/ML-based wireless simulations.
Top industry researchers can use all the capabilities of the 6G Development Research Cloud platform to advance their work.
The future convergence of 6G and AI is expected to revolutionize the technology landscape," said Charlie Zang, senior vice president, Samsung Research America. This will lead to seamless connectivity and intelligent systems that will redefine the way we interact with the digital world, ushering in an era of unrivaled innovation and connectivity."
Testing and simulation will play a critical role in the development of next-generation wireless technologies. Leading providers in this space are working with NVIDIA to meet the new requirements imposed by AI and 6G.
Ansys is committed to advancing the mission of the 6G Research Cloud by seamlessly integrating the advanced Ansys Perceive EM solver into the Omniverse ecosystem," said Shawn Carpenter, director of 5G/6G and Spatial Programs at Ansys. Perceive EM revolutionizes the way 6G systems are created. The way digital twins are created. the convergence of NVIDIA and Ansys technologies will undoubtedly pave the way for AI-enabled 6G communications systems."
Kailash Narayanan, president and general manager of the Communications Solutions Business Group at IDEXX, said, "Wireless-specific design tools have limited use, but are essential for building powerful AI. YesTech is excited to apply its wireless networking expertise to enable the next generation of innovation in 6G communications networks."
The NVIDIA 6G Research Cloud Platform brings together these powerful foundational tools to enable telcos to unlock the full potential of 6G and pave the way for future wireless technologies. Researchers who want to access the platform can sign up for the NVIDIA 6G Developer Program.
