TDK Corporation (TSE:6762) expands its range of tunnel magnetoresistance (TMR) Angle sensors with the introduction of the TAS8240 sensor for automotive and industrial applications. The new sensor is available in compact QFN16(3 x 3 mm2) and TSSOP16 (5 x 6.4 mm2) packages for four redundant analog single-ended SIN/COS outputs and low power consumption. This sensor facilitates accurate Angle measurement for high performance in confined space environments. As a 360° Angle sensor, the TAS8240 is ideal for precise measurement of rotor position in brushless DC motors used in safety-critical devices such as power steering, brake boosters or traction motors.

The TAS8240 is a compact TMR-based sensor with redundancy, affordable, and consists of 4 Wheatstone Bridges for Angle detection

• Angular accuracy up to ±1.0° over ambient temperatures ranging from -40°C to +150°C

• High stability in temperature, magnetic field range and lifetime range

• Provides accurate rotor position measurements with redundancy required for safety-related applications such as power steering motors

The sensor contains four pairs of TMR half-bridges and provides four separate SIN/COS outputs by applying a magnetic field in the x-y plane. Then, even in the event of a failure of one of the output signals, a higher level of system security up to ASIL Level D can be achieved, while providing greater availability of location information.

The QFN16 package is a surface mount technology (SMT) solution that occupies a much smaller area than the TSSOP16, making it ideal for space-constrained applications. Wettable side panels help guarantee welding quality and are suitable for automotive grade scenarios. Depending on the architecture of the system, the new sensor can also support the concept of failure without affecting operation.
