September 1 (Reuters) - Nvidia Corp said on Wednesday local time that U.S. officials asked it to stop exporting two of its top computing chips to China for artificial intelligence work, a move that could cripple Chinese companies' ability to do advanced work such as image recognition.
On the same day, Nvidia issued an announcement stating that it had received an official notice from the United States that the company would not sell any products to Russia, but affected by the new export rules of the United States, if it exports two high-end GPU chips to customers in China (including Hong Kong, China) and Russia - A100 and H100, a new export license is required. The move could cost Nvidia as much as $400 million and could even force it to move some of its operations out of China.
At the same time, AMD also said that it has received a new license request from the US government to stop the export of its MI250 artificial intelligence chip to China, but the company believes that its MI100 chip sales will not be affected. AMD said the new rules will not have a significant impact on its business.
