Thread's latest version 3 wireless network supports Matter standards and optimizes the smart home
The Thread 1.3.0 release simplifies R&D and deployment investments for IoT device manufacturers and provides users with a seamless link experience.
August 31, 2022 – The Thread Group, an industry consortium dedicated to driving IoT convergence and addressing security, power and architectural challenges at the network layer, today announced that the latest iteration of its wireless networking protocol, Thread 1.3.0, is now available Matter standard is supported. Building on previous iterations, Thread 1.3.0 is fully backward compatible, opening up room for widespread IoT adoption in homes and commercial buildings by removing barriers for both device manufacturers and end users.
Homeowners and building planners expect a seamless experience from their smart environment. This experience relies on the ease of use, interoperability, and security of devices that reliably deliver on their promises. This has been difficult for smart device makers to do in the past, as they were often hindered by interoperability issues when bringing new products to market.
Combining the Thread wireless networking protocol with the Matter standard lays the foundation for manufacturers to deliver seamlessly connected devices for home and commercial building scenarios. These devices bring the full capabilities of IP routing and service discovery to the Thread network through Thread 1.3.0 support for the Matter standard, enabling Matter to operate seamlessly on the Thread network. This allows manufacturers to focus on innovation without having to think about connectivity, directly benefiting end users.
Thread is a reliable, secure, and ultra-low-power networking protocol that enhances the connected experience by delivering fast response times, greater coverage, and years of battery life. As an open IP-based standard, Thread enables the safe, reliable, and easy integration of home automation devices such as lighting, thermostats, door locks, sensors, and smart speakers into a smart home or building, with direct connectivity to the cloud .
As an IP-based network transport layer protocol, Thread can work with any IP-based application layer. In addition to supporting Matter, Thread 1.3.0 will also support other application layers such as KNX IoT, DALI+, OCF and BACnet.
