Sandisk introduced the HBF high-bandwidth flash concept earlier this year. This is a new type of storage similar to HBM memory but based on NAND, designed specifically for AI inference workloads, offering 8 to 16 times the storage capacity of HBM solutions at a similar cost.

On the 6th in local time in California, USA, SanDisk announced the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with SK Hynix, with SK Hynix also participating in the development of the HBF specification.


SK Hynix's involvement is significant for SanDisk, as SK Hynix holds a pivotal position in the current HBM ecosystem and can provide valuable experience for the development of HBF standards. Additionally, the collaboration between the two leading flash memory manufacturers will help elevate HBF to an industry-wide standard.


SK Hynix's Chief Development Officer, An Hyun, stated: ‘As the challenges of next-generation computing grow increasingly severe, the demand for related solutions is also rising rapidly. By collaborating with SanDisk to establish the HBF specification, we are actively advancing the commercialisation of this innovative technology. We believe this technology is key to unlocking the full potential of AI and next-generation data workloads.’


SanDisk also announced that the company aims to achieve initial sampling of HBF high-bandwidth flash memory by the second half of 2026 and sampling of AI inference devices equipped with HBF storage stacks by early 2027.
