Toshiba Electronic Devices & Storage Corporation (Toshiba) today announced the launch of the TCD2728DG, a lens-compact[1] CCD[2] linear image sensor for A3 multifunction printers. This sensor has 7,500 image sensing elements[3] and supports A3 multifunction printers. Compared to Toshiba's existing TCD2726DG product, it achieves higher efficiency in reducing random noise (NDσ)[4]. The product is now available for mass production.
The demand for high-speed, high-resolution copying and scanning of large volumes of diverse documents is growing in commercial office environments. This is particularly true for A3 multifunction printers, where improving image quality has become a critical challenge, and suppressing NDσ in the signal is essential.
Compared to Toshiba's existing TCD2726DG product, the TCD2728DG features a lower output amplifier gain [5], reducing random noise by approximately 40% [6]. This improvement enhances the image quality of multifunction printers. The new CCD linear sensor achieves a data rate of up to 100MHz (50MHz × 2 channels), enabling high-speed processing of large volumes of images, making it ideal for linear scan cameras in detection systems requiring real-time decision-making.
In the future, Toshiba will continue to expand its linear image sensor product line to meet the growing demand for high-speed, high-resolution imaging and sensing technology, providing robust support for scanning in multifunction printers and sensing applications in detection equipment.
Applications:
- A3 multifunction printers (resolution of 600 dpi)
- 7,500-pixel linear scan cameras for various inspection systems (such as semiconductor inspection equipment and food sorting equipment)
Features:
- Random noise reduced by approximately 40%
- High-speed CCD linear image sensor: Data rate = 100 MHz (main clock frequency 50 MHz × 2 channels) (maximum)
- Built-in timing generator circuit and CCD drive circuit [7] help simplify system development
Notes:
[1] A method of reducing the image using an optical lens and projecting it onto a CCD or CMOS image sensor.
[2] CCD: Charge-Coupled Device.
[3] The number of pixels required to scan the short side (297mm) of an A3-sized image at 600dpi resolution.
(dpi (dots per inch): the number of dots per inch)
Conversion of A3 size to inches: 297mm/25.4mm ≒ 11.7 inches
11.7 × 600 = 7,020 pixels ⇒ After allowing for a margin, 7,500 pixels
[4] Irregular noise affecting image quality.
[5] Circuit for adjusting the output signal amplification rate. The amplification factor is proportional to the noise.
[6] Comparison with Toshiba's existing product TCD2726DG. Values measured by Toshiba.
[7] Circuit for generating the signal required to drive a linear image sensor.
