STMicroelectronics' new offline high-voltage converter, VIPer11B, can provide high-efficiency and low-cost small power supplies for applications up to 8W, including lighting, smart home devices, household appliances, and smart meters.
STMicroelectronics' VIPer11B power converter integrates a wealth of functions, which helps simplify circuit design, reduce the number of external components, and thereby lower the bill of materials cost. The 800V withstand voltage MOSFET only requires a small buffer component. The internal senseFET current detection function has almost no loss and does not need an external resistor. The on-chip integrated high-voltage starting circuit only requires one external capacitor to power the Vcc, while the frequency jitter oscillator minimizes the need for external filter components to meet electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) regulations.
In addition, these converters adopt a compact SSOP10 package, which can supply power in confined Spaces. This advantage is particularly useful in applications with strict form factor requirements, such as LED lighting drivers and smart bulbs. These converters also help meet the strict requirements of eco-design regulations. The low standby current can reduce the no-load power consumption to below 10mW, and the pulse jump operation mode can improve the energy efficiency under light load.
Design flexibility is another major advantage. The wide-voltage Vcc allows the converter to be powered through the auxiliary winding of the transformer or the output in a non-isolated topology. VIPer11B can be used in non-isolated flyback step-down and step-down/boost topologies, as well as isolated flyback topologies with regulators on either the primary or secondary side.
The VIPer11B converter features output overload and overvoltage protection, as well as automatic restart, Vcc clamping, over-temperature protection and soft start functions, which can help designers build powerful and reliable power supplies. The VIPer11B converter is available in two models: the VIPer113B with a maximum drain current of 370mA or the VIPer114B with a maximum drain current of 480mA.
