On 8 July, according to documents provided by Navitas Semiconductor, TSMC plans to cease production of gallium nitride (GaN) wafers in July 2027. Japanese semiconductor manufacturer ROHM is also a partner of TSMC in the field of gallium nitride and has already launched products on the 650V process platform.
Japanese media outlet EE Times Japan conducted interviews with both TSMC and ROHM regarding this matter.
TSMC confirmed the news of its withdrawal from the GaN business, stating that the decision was ‘based on market dynamics and aligns with the company's long-term business strategy.’ The company will continue to closely collaborate with customers over the next two years to meet demand, with its ‘focus remaining on providing sustainable value to our partners and the market.’
ROHM stated that ‘there is currently no significant impact,’ adding that it will ‘continue to leverage our shared strengths to maintain and deepen our cooperative framework, appropriately addressing market/customer needs,’ and ‘will discuss and consider various possibilities for future development/production structures.’
