STMicroelectronics' L9800 automotive-grade 8-channel low-side driver complies with ISO 26262 automotive functional safety standards and features a compact lead-free package, which can save circuit board space for body control modules, HVAC and climate controllers, as well as power domain controllers.

The output of L9800 can drive resistive, capacitive or inductive loads, such as relays, solenoid valves and LED lights. The L9800 has a continuous real-time diagnostic function, and each channel is equipped with open circuit, short circuit, overcurrent and overheat protection functions, which can enhance the reliability of the vehicle and simplify the system-level ISO 26262 certification process, up to ASIL-B level. The SPI port of the L9800 provides diagnostic signals and also supports access to the internal configuration registers of the driver for device setup.

This driver can drive eight output channels in two ways: through the SPI interface or by using two dedicated parallel input pins that can be mapped to the selected output. In an emergency, even if the digital power supply voltage is unavailable, these two pins allow for hard control of the two default channels. Therefore, when the system malfunctions (such as microcontroller failure or under-voltage power supply), the L9800 enters the limping home mode, which can maintain the operation of necessary functions and ensure safety and convenience.

The L9800 also offers a bulb surge mode that can drive small bulbs of approximately 2W or other electronic loads with high input capacitance, and it features overcurrent protection. In addition, when the engine starts, even if the battery voltage drops to 3V, this driver can still ensure safe operation.
