On 19 June, Reuters reported that Apple's hardware technology chief, Johny Srouji, revealed in a private setting last month that the company is considering using generative AI technology to accelerate its custom chip design process.
According to an audio recording of the remarks obtained by Reuters, Srouji reviewed Apple's development journey since the release of the A4 chip for the iPhone in 2010, with these custom chips now widely used in devices such as Mac desktops and the Vision Pro headset.
He said one of the key lessons Apple has learned is the necessity of using the most advanced tools for chip design, including the latest design software provided by EDA (Electronic Design Automation) companies.
Currently, the two major EDA giants, Cadence Design Systems and Synopsys, are competing to integrate AI capabilities into their products. Srouji said, ‘EDA companies are crucial in helping us tackle complex chip design tasks. Generative AI has the potential to complete more design work in less time, significantly improving efficiency.’
He also noted that another important strategy for Apple is to make bold decisions and never look back. For example, in 2020, Apple decided to completely transition its longest-standing product line, the Mac series, from Intel chips to its own Apple Silicon. This transition had no backup plan and did not retain any branch products based on the old architecture.
Srouji said, ‘We took a huge gamble at the time. There was no backup plan, no parallel product lines, only full-scale implementation, and the software workload was also exceptionally massive.’
