On 11 June, Reuters reported that Qualcomm announced on Tuesday local time that it would establish an artificial intelligence research and development centre in Vietnam, focusing on promoting the application of generative and agent-based AI in areas such as smartphones, personal computers, extended reality (XR), automobiles and the Internet of Things (IoT).


Qualcomm stated that this initiative aligns with Vietnam's national strategy in AI, semiconductors, and digital transformation. The R&D centre will prioritise technology transfer, ecosystem collaboration, and talent development.


Qualcomm's President of Global Affairs, Alex Rogers, also met with Vietnamese President Nguyen Xuan Phuc. President Phuc expressed welcome for Qualcomm to continue expanding its operations in Vietnam across sectors such as semiconductors and digital infrastructure.  


According to previous reports, Qualcomm also announced on 1 April that it would acquire Vietnamese AI research company MovianAI. MovianAI was originally the generative AI division of VinAI, a subsidiary of Vietnamese conglomerate Vingroup. Following the acquisition, Dr Hung Bui, founder and CEO of VinAI (and former Google DeepMind researcher), will join Qualcomm.
