Qualcomm is planning another foray into the server processor market, reducing its reliance on smartphones and challenging Intel.
Qualcomm's chief executive is trying to turn Qualcomm into a broader semiconductor supplier, not just a top maker of smartphones. But as early as four years ago, Qualcomm's former CEO abandoned earlier plans to enter the server market.
The successful entry into server chips means that Qualcomm is expected to drive up product prices. Qualcomm's mobile phone chip products are usually priced at tens of dollars, while the current price of the highest-end server processor chips on the market exceeds $10,000. Large cloud data centers have long relied on Intel's server chip technology, and recently more and more people are adopting processors designed by Arm. In 2017, Qualcomm tried to sell the Centriq 2400, an Arm-based server chip, to be manufactured by Samsung, which it said beat Intel's Xeon processors in both performance and cost. But less than a year later, Qualcomm announced the closure of the server processor business.
For Intel, Qualcomm's latest move will bring more competition to a market the company once dominated. Intel has also been working to strengthen its technology and manufacturing capabilities after losing market share to self-developed chips from companies such as AMD and Amazon.
