May 14, 2025 - Littelfuse Corporation, a diversified industrial technology manufacturing company dedicated to powering a sustainable, connected and safer world, today announced the launch of its Pxxx0S3G-A SIDACtor® Protection Thyristor Series in a compact DO-214AB (SMC) package. The company today announced the Pxxx0S3G-A SIDACtor® protection thyristor series, the industry's first 2 kA thyristor in a DO-214AB (SMC) compact package.Designed to protect equipment in harsh environments from severe overvoltage transients, the Pxxx0S3G-A series enables engineers to achieve greater product miniaturisation while maintaining excellent protection and compliance with regulatory standards.

The Pxxx0S3G-A series provides robust, high inrush current protection in a compact package, enabling designers to achieve greater product miniaturisation without sacrificing reliability or compliance,’ said Charlie Cai, director of product marketing for automotive TVSs at Littelfuse. This is especially important for applications exposed to high-energy surge events such as on-board chargers, electric vehicle charging stations, industrial automation power supplies and solar inverters.’


Key features and functionality

High Surge Protection in a Compact Size: The Pxxx0S3G-A series offers 2 kA (8/20 µs) surge protection in a DO-214AB (SMC) package, the smallest package capable of such high power density;

Enhanced Design Flexibility: The DO-214AB's small form factor makes it easier to integrate into space-constrained designs, including IoT devices, high power density industrial equipment, and medical power supplies, than traditional solutions that require larger TO-262 packages;

Reliability and long life: Unlike traditional solutions that degrade over time, the Pxxx0S3G-A series withstands transients without degradation, ensuring long-term protection of the device and reducing maintenance costs;

Automotive-grade compliance: The series is fully compliant with the AEC-Q101 automotive standard, making it ideal for automotive applications such as on-board charger (OBC) protection, BEV/PHEV protection, and automotive battery charging systems.


Markets and Applications

The Pxxx0S3G-A series is designed to provide robust protection in a variety of demanding environments, including:

Automotive and Electric Vehicle (EV) Systems: Protecting on-board chargers (OBCs), BEV and PHEV battery charging systems, and EV wall chargers from high-energy surge events;

Industrial and factory automation: protects power supplies and high-power distribution networks under harsh operating conditions;

Renewable energy systems: ensuring the reliability of DC/AC inverters for solar systems and energy storage systems in the event of surge fluctuations;

Information and Communication Technology (ICT): securing sensitive equipment in Uninterruptible Power Supplies (UPS) and AC high power distribution grids.


Comparison with traditional solutions


Conventional solutions are often challenged by their bulky design, which can fail over time, reducing their protection efficacy. the Pxxx0S3G-A is more compact and has a surge rating that is ideal for highly exposed applications. It offers significant advantages over the Pxxx0FNL 3 kA SIDACtor family in a TO-262M package, requiring approximately 50% less board space.


This new product is a quantum leap forward, being the first DO-214AB size capable of handling 2 kA (8/20) surges. Previously, a much larger TO-262 package was required to achieve this level of protection.
