NXP Semiconductors N.V. has released a new generation of S32R47 imaging radar processor featuring 16-nanometer FinFET technology, further consolidating the company's professional strength in the field of imaging radar. The S32R47 series is the third-generation imaging radar processor, with performance up to twice that of its predecessor, while also improving system costs and energy efficiency. Combining NXP's millimeter-wave radar transceivers, power management and in-vehicle network solutions, the S32R47 series meets the ISO26262 ASIL B(D) functional safety requirements and prepares the automotive industry for a new level of autonomous driving.
According to the "State of the Radar Industry 2024" report by Yole Intelligence, by 2029, approximately 40% of the vehicles on the road will be passenger cars equipped with L2+/ L3 autonomous driving functions, and the number of L4 vehicles will also increase. To serve the rapidly growing software-defined vehicle (SDV) autonomous driving market, automakers and Tier 1 suppliers need to enhance radar performance, as radar is crucial for achieving safe and advanced autonomous driving functions such as assisted driving or fully autonomous parking.
Meindert van den Beld, senior vice president of NXP and general manager of Radar and advanced driver assistance Systems, said: "Compared with current mass production solutions, the S32R47 can handle three times or more antenna channels in real time and efficiently." It offers higher imaging radar resolution, sensitivity and dynamic range, meeting the demanding application scenarios of autonomous driving, while still meeting the strict power consumption and system cost targets set by automakers for mass production.
Imaging radar utilizes richer point cloud data to conduct more detailed modeling of the environment. This is a key enabling technology for artificial intelligence perception systems, which can achieve assisted driving and autonomous driving in challenging environmental conditions such as complex urban scenes.
The S32R47 integrates a high-performance multi-core radar processing system, which can output more dense point cloud data and enhance algorithm functions, thereby empowering the new generation of advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS). It enhances the object separation ability, detection reliability and classification accuracy, and can more accurately identify vulnerable road users or lost objects and other targets.
NXP's third-generation imaging radar solution
The new generation of solutions is based on the expertise and mature technologies of the previous two generations of products. The performance of the radar microprocessor (MPU) has been increased by up to twice, and the chip size has been reduced by 38%. Supporting AI/ML, it can achieve stronger functions such as Angle of arrival estimation (DoA) processing and object classification.
NXP's new generation of imaging radar solution optimizes the bill of materials, enhances the expansion of antenna channels and processing capabilities, and helps to create a brand-new imaging radar.
NXP solutions can effectively address system integration challenges while achieving the same or better performance by reducing the number of antenna channels by up to 89%, and significantly lower costs, reduce size and lower power consumption.
