April 19 - Micron announced yesterday that the company has decided to completely reclassify its business units (BUs) based on market segments to take advantage of transformative growth driven by AI across the board, from the data centre to edge devices. Micron will begin the business structure transition immediately and expects to complete it early in the second half of this year.

As high-performance memory and storage become increasingly important in driving AI, this business unit reorganisation will enable Micron to remain at the forefront of innovation in each market segment through deeper customer engagement to meet the dynamic needs of the industry, Micron said.

Micron previously had four business units: CNBU for compute and networking, SBU for storage, MBU for mobile, and EBU for embedded; the total number of business units remains the same under the new structure, but there are significant changes in specific business areas:

Cloud Memory Business Unit CMBU: Focused on memory solutions for large hyperscale cloud customers and HBM memory for all data centre customers;

Core Data Centre Business Unit CDBU: Focused on memory solutions for OEM data centre customers and storage solutions for all data centre customers;

Mobile and Client Business Unit MCBU: Focused on providing memory and storage solutions in the mobile and client space.

Automotive and Embedded Business Unit AEBU: Focused on memory and storage solutions for the automotive, industrial and consumer segments.

Micron's new business unit setup can be seen to emphasise its focus on custom memory and storage solutions for large customers, and puts automotive storage on a par with embedded or even higher.
