On April 17, 2025, China - STMicroelectronics (ST for short), a leading global semiconductor company serving multiple electronic application fields We have launched the Stellar automotive-grade microcontroller with built-in xMemory. xMemory is a new generation of variable storage configuration memory built into the Stellar series of automotive microcontrollers, which can completely transform the arduous process of developing software-defined vehicles (SDVS) and upgrading electric vehicle platforms.
Unlike the development and testing costs associated with different chips due to the need for different storage capacities, the Stellar microcontroller with built-in xMemory is the first innovative product in the current market that can change the storage configuration, providing customers with a high-efficiency and cost-effective solution. By adopting a simplified approach from the very beginning, car manufacturers can make their car designs more forward-looking. This approach not only provides greater space for innovation in the later stage of the development cycle, but also helps to reduce development costs and accelerate the time to market for products by simplifying the supply chain process. The Stellar P6 MCU is the first Stellar microcontroller to adopt xMemory, mainly used in the new trends and architectures of the electric drive system for electric vehicles. It is planned to go into production by the end of 2025.
Luca Rodeschini, Vice President of the Product Division of STMicroelectronics and General manager of the General Motors and Automotive Microcontroller Division, said: "ST has developed the ultimate memory technology with very small storage units for the automotive market, which can meet the endless demand for larger memory in automotive applications." The Stellar with built-in xMemory will simplify the future automotive architecture for automakers, optimize cost-effectiveness, and significantly shorten product development time. This innovative solution enables the same hardware to provide the original infrastructure and functions, and reserves sufficient memory space for continuous product innovation, allowing automakers to confidently introduce digital and electric innovation technologies, maintain their market leadership, and extend the life cycle of vehicles.
Axel Aue, vice president of Bosch, said: "By embedding phase change memory (PCM) technology, Stellar provides a robust and flexible memory concept that can be used to develop high-performance and adaptable automotive microcontrollers." Compared with other memory technologies, such as RRAM and MRAM, the application advantages of PCM technology are stronger.
Anshel Sag, the chief analyst of Moor Insights & Strategy, said, "By choosing scalable MCUS like Stellar xMemory, engineers don't have to spend a lot of money redesigning the hardware to support new software functions." Whether in the early stage of development or during the OTA update process after release, as the amount of software code keeps increasing, the same platform can be upgraded on-site, thereby significantly shortening the time to market and maintenance costs of the product. Solutions like Stellar that adopt xMemory can also simplify the logistics process and improve the efficiency of the bill of materials.
Working principle
Automobile manufacturers need to seamlessly integrate software and hardware, maximize the cross-platform secondary utilization rate of software and hardware, extend the life cycle of automobiles, and enhance digital functions. As the automotive industry continuously introduces new features, new regulations, and artificial intelligence and machine learning applications with high demands for memory capacity, as well as over-the-air (OTA) update capabilities, software is becoming increasingly complex, and memory capacity has become a bottleneck for the development of automobiles. To address this challenge, STMicroelectronics' xMemory storage technology can expand memory capacity during the development stage or during vehicle use, allowing automotive applications to be updated and upgraded without being constrained by memory space.
Choosing the right MCU at the beginning of the software-defined vehicle life cycle can ensure that the microcontroller can provide sufficient storage space for future software development. Choosing chips with excessively high storage capacity will increase costs, while choosing chips with too low storage capacity may require finding an MCU with larger storage space later and retesting, thereby increasing the complexity, cost and time of development. The Stellar MCUs with built-in xMemory has a competitive price, which can save more costs, simplify the OEM supply chain, extend the product life, maximize the cross-project secondary utilization rate, shorten the testing time, and thus accelerate the product launch.
PCM Phase change Memory and Stellar Technology Description:
ST has always been at the forefront of the transition from flash memory to embedded non-volatile memory (eNVM) technology in automotive MCUS, launching the first automotive-grade 28nm eNVM technology, which is also the core technology of xMemory. Compared with NVM technologies such as RRAM, MRAM and flash memory, ST's embedded phase change memory (ePCM) performs better in terms of energy efficiency, performance and area (PPA) indicators.
PCM features the industry's smallest eNVM storage unit. The storage density of 18nm and 28nm PCM is twice that of other technologies.
The upcoming Stellar P and G series of MCUS based on Arm® processors will integrate the new generation of PCM technology. The Stellar product family is specifically designed for automotive applications, simplifying the vehicle's electrical architecture and enhancing energy efficiency, flexibility and safety. The product portfolio includes Stellar Integration MCUS (Stellar P and Stellar G series) for central domain controllers, domain controllers, and body control, which integrate multiple independent communication and control ECU functions. There is also a Stellar Electrification MCU (Stellar E series) optimized for the control of the power converter of the electric drive module of electric vehicles.
