April 8, 2025 - Vishay Intertechnology, Inc. has announced the launch of the VEML6046X00, an industry-advanced, AEC-Q100-compliant RGBIR colour sensor from its Optoelectronics Products Division.Vishay Semiconductors The VEML6046X00 integrates a high-sensitivity photodiode, a low-noise amplifier and a 16-bit analogue-to-digital converter in a miniature, opaque, 2.67 mm x 2.45 mm surface-mount package with a height of only 0.6 mm.

The recently announced automotive-grade device features independent red, green, blue and infrared (IR) channels to calculate colour temperature and achieve white balance in displays.The VEML6046X00 green channel has an optical spectrum sensitivity close to that of the human eye, ensuring highly accurate measurements, while the IR channel helps to stabilise the output over a wide range of light sources. The sensor's ambient light detection range of 0 lx to 176 klx is unsaturated in daylight, with a resolution of up to 0.0053 lx/ct, and can be placed on the back of a dark-coloured lens.

The VEML6046X00 operates at temperatures up to +110°C and can be used for automotive display backlight control, infotainment systems, mirror dimming, interior lighting control systems, flat-screen displays, colour recognition, CCT measurements, ambient lighting and laser headlight monitoring. The sensors support the easy-to-use I²C bus communication interface for these applications and have interrupt functionality.

The VEML6046X00 has a supply voltage of 2.5 V to 3.6 V, an I²C bus voltage of 1.7 V to 3.6 V, and consumes only 0.5 μA (typical) in shutdown mode. The devices are RoHS and Vishay Green compliant, halogen-free, and have a moisture sensitivity rating of J-STD-020E Standard Class 2a with a four-week shop storage time.
