STMicroelectronics, the world's leading semiconductor company serving multiple electronic applications, has launched the STM32U3 new series of microcontrollers (MCUS), designed with advanced energy-saving innovations to reduce the deployment of intelligent interconnection technologies, especially in remote areas.
The new family of MCUS target applications targeting iot devices. Typically, iot devices must be kept running for long periods of time, maintenance-free, and run on limited power from button batteries, ambient solar cells, or thermal power sources. Typical applications are products with very low power consumption, including medical equipment such as electricity, water and gas meters, blood glucose meters, insulin pumps, animal health care monitors, forest fire detectors, and industrial sensors such as thermostats and fireworks detectors. The STM32U3 MCU is also used in consumer products such as smartwatches, wearables, and headsets.
Patrick Aidoune, General Manager, Universal MCU Product Division, STMicroelectronics, said: "The STM32U3 family continues ST's well-known legacy of ultra-low power general-purpose microcontrollers, opening the door to the adoption of smart technology in diverse environments. Through the introduction of innovative technologies such as the latest near-threshold design, the dynamic power consumption of the new products has been reduced to the limit, and the energy efficiency of the new products has been improved by two times compared to the previous generation, helping customers achieve their sustainability goals."
In addition to extremely high energy efficiency, the STM32U3 series utilizes the latest hardware security technologies to provide robust network protection and meet the information security needs of iot devices. The new MCU permanently solidifies the key in secure memory, thereby eliminating vulnerable CPU finger-fetching operations. In addition, STMicroelectronics installs a certificate for each product before it leaves the factory, which enhances information security and simplifies certificate management. All of these security mechanisms, together with secure assets that can be certified by SESIP3 and PSA Level 3, such as crypto accelerators, TrustZone® isolation, random number generators and product lifecycle management, will help customers meet the requirements of the upcoming RED and CRA regulations.
Customer evaluation:
Manuel Frech, product Development Engineer at smaXtec, said: "The STM32U3 allows us to take animal health monitoring hardware to the next level. It operates in a very low power mode of just a few µA/MHz, allowing us to reduce the power consumption of current data processing algorithms while adding new capabilities. In addition, it uses a more advanced low-power mode that puts the device into a deep sleep if there is no data to process. The new STOP3 power saving mode and wake up feature is an effective way to reduce power consumption."
Technical specification
In the past, STMicroelectronics' STM32 Ultra-low Power (ULP) MCUS have led the market trend, and now the new STM32U3 series takes ultra-low power performance to a new level. The new family of MCUS utilizes advanced energy efficient chip design, optimized design with AI-enabled tools, and the Arm® Cortex®-M33 core running at up to 96MHz, with a Coremark/ milliwatt test score of 117, which is the most advanced level in the market, which is almost twice that of the STM32U5 series. Five times the STM32L4 series.
STM32U3 MC uses near threshold voltage technology to reduce the operating voltage of IC transistors to the minimum, according to the power and voltage square proportional law, near threshold voltage can save energy, therefore, STM32U3 MCU has become a new dynamic performance benchmark
During the implementation of the near Threshold innovation design, ST adopted an AI-driven wafer-level adaptive voltage regulation approach to correct process deviations in the manufacturing process
The STM32U3 series has not only low dynamic power consumption (as low as 10µA/MHz), but also extremely low static power consumption of only 1.6µA
The STM32U3 has dual flash memory up to 1MB and 256kB of SRAM
In terms of data security, the STM32U3 MCU incorporates all the successful security protection features of the STM32U5, as well as additional key store capabilities. The STM32U3 MCU now comes with a key installed before delivery and is protected by coupled chain bridge (CCB) technology, the first use of CCB technology in the STM32 MCU family
There are two product lines to choose from, offering MCUS with or without hardware crypto accelerators
In addition to low power consumption, the new products integrate efficient, high-performance peripheral interfaces, including the latest I3C digital interface
MCU temperature rating is divided into industrial grade (operating temperature -40°C to 85°C) and high temperature industrial grade (operating temperature -40°C to 105°C).
