A new report from Berg Insight, an IoT market research firm, says the number of global cellular IoT subscribers grew by 22 percent to 2.1 billion in 2021, Star Gold News said.
Key regional markets in China, Western Europe and North America saw similar growth during the year as the world recovered from the COVID-19 pandemic. By 2026, Berg Insight now expects 4.3 billion IoT devices worldwide to be connected to cellular networks.
By the end of 2021, the top 10 mobile operators report an active base of 1.8 billion cellular IoT connections, accounting for 86 percent of total connections. China Mobile is the world's largest provider of cellular IoT connections, with an estimated 801 million cellular IoT connections. China Unicom and China Telecom rank second and third with 300 million and 297 million connections, respectively.
IoT connectivity services account for about 1 percent of total revenue for most operator groups. Berg Insight's analysis of IoT business KPIs published by mobile operators in different regions of the world shows that global IoT connectivity revenues grew by about 15 percent in 2020, while monthly APRU declined by 2 percent to €0.38.
