Renesas Electronics today announced the availability of certified PROFINET IRT and PROFIdrive software stacks for its RZ/T and RZ/N series of industrial network system microprocessors (MPUs). The initial software versions are available for the RZ/T2M MPUs designed for servo motor control applications, and for the RZ/N2L for industrial IoT gateway applications such as remote IOs or industrial Ethernet devices, simplifying the certification process for customers' devices by using Renesas products equipped with the software stack.

The new software stack is Renesas' first certified PROFINET software solution to support PROFINET IRT (isochronous real-time) and PROFIdrive. PROFINET, the dominant industrial Ethernet protocol for automation systems, facilitates high-speed communication for industrial automation devices; its highest performance level - PROFINET IRT, which ensures accurate and time-sensitive data transmission, is ideal for real-time applications such as servo drives and motion control systems, and is therefore particularly suitable for manufacturing, robotics, and process control where real-time operation is required.

PROFINET software stack on Renesas RZ/T and RZ/N series processors

Renesas' certified implementation of the PROFINET IRT software stack covers all the key functions required for industrial device communications, including PROFINET RT (real-time) communications. The software supports cyclic data exchange with PROFINET IO controllers and handles diagnostics, process and status alarms, as well as plug and unplug alarms. It can assign IP addresses and device names via PROFINET and device applications, and additionally includes quick-start functionality, shared device support, media redundancy (MRP) and system redundancy (S2).

PROFIdrive simplifies embedding of drive systems

PROFIdrive enables the seamless integration of variable frequency drives, servo motors and other motion control devices in automation systems, ensuring efficient communication and operation.PROFIdrive standardises the exchange of data between devices, providing key parameters such as speed, torque and position, which are essential for precise control of drives. It supports both real-time communication via PROFINET IRT and conventional Ethernet communication, allowing flexibility in a wide range of industrial applications.
