New entry-level STM32 MCUs expand storage capacity, increase number of interfaces and support CAN FD buses

7 March 2025 - Three new additions to STMicroelectronics' STM32C0 family of microcontrollers (MCUs) give designers greater design flexibility, offering higher memory capacity, more interfaces and CAN FD options for enhanced communication.

The STM32C051, a new product in the STM32C0 cost-effective family, comes with up to 64KB of Flash memory for application designs that require more storage space than can be accommodated by the STM32C031 MCUs, and up to 48-pin packages with more interfaces and user I/O channels.

The other two new products, the STM32C091 and STM32C092, have an extended Flash capacity of 256KB in a maximum 64-pin package. In addition, the STM32C092 adds a CAN FD interface. With an on-chip CAN FD interface, users can cut BOM bill-of-materials costs, simplify the hardware design of industrial communication and networking devices, and take full advantage of the protocol upgrade's flexibility, speed, and payload capacity.

As a cost-conscious product line within the STM32 family, the STM32C0 series offers developers a high degree of design flexibility, with on-chip Flash capacities ranging from 32KB to 256KB and a rich set of integrated peripheral interfaces,’ said Patrick Aidoune, General Manager, General Purpose MCUs Division, STMicroelectronics. Now, the large Flash and RAM capacity of the STM32C091/C092 allows designers to store both the GUI software and the main application on the microcontroller, creating an enjoyable user experience and simplifying the development process with ST's TouchGFX tools.’

As an affordable entry-level product in the STM32 family, the STM32C0 MCUs include widely used interfaces, such as crystal-free USB full-speed devices and USART, as well as timers and analogue/digital converters (ADCs). To complete the cost-conscious feature set, this economical design features an on-chip clock with a single power input, which saves more external components such as timers, decoupling capacitors, and reduces bill-of-materials (BOM) costs. Saving external components also allows for smaller and simpler PCB boards.

The full range of STM32C0 MCUs offers developers additional benefits, including ST's Extended Product Life programme, which ensures that ST's chips are in stock and available for a long period of time throughout the lifecycle of an industrial project. As a member of the high-quality STM32 product family, the STM32C0 MCUs simplify product-level certifications, such as IEC 61508 functional safety certification.Both the STM32C0 series and the STM32G0 series are powered by the Arm® Cortex®-M0+ core, but the STM32G0 series delivers more performance and features. The two families of STM32 MCUs have a lot in common, including package style and pinout and peripheral IP modules, making the two families interchangeable in application design.
