Power Integrations has introduced a new HiperLCS-2 chipset that doubles power output. The new device uses more advanced half-bridge switching technology and innovative packaging to deliver up to 1650W of continuous output power with an efficiency of more than 98%. This new addition to the product family is aimed at industrial power supplies as well as chargers for electric scooters and outdoor power tools, and its high efficiency and high integration reduce housing volume and eliminate the need to redesign vents and fans, thereby improving reliability and dust and moisture resistance.

In 50W and higher power applications, the highly integrated HiperLCS-2 product family reduces the number of components and board area of half-bridge LLC resonant power converters by 30 to 60 percent. The new IC features a new highly efficient heat-dissipating POWeDIP package that increases continuous power to more than 1.6kW and allows for short-time peak loads of 2.5kW. The package contains an electrically insulated ceramic thermal pad that is easy to install to any flat radiator surface. It provides enough creepage distance for the package pin to achieve overall temperature rise performance of less than 1 degree Celsius per watt.


Zeeshan Kabeer, Product Marketing Manager at Power Integrations, said: "High power and high efficiency are essential requirements for fully sealed chargers and adapters. For those who rely on power tools or personal transportation to make a living, it is unacceptable for chargers to fail due to dust, moisture, insects, or damage to electromechanical components. "Our new high-efficiency HiperLCS-2 chipset delivers 1,650W of output power and is ideal for manufacturing fully enclosed chargers that can easily handle these critical applications."

The primary side HiperLCS2-HB device in the chipset is a half-bridge structure with integrated 600V FREDFETs. Self-biased power supply and startup control reduce system cost and complexity by ensuring proper operation without the use of an external biased power supply. The companion chip HiperLCS2-SR in the chipset integrates the secondary side master controller to provide optimized synchronous rectification (SR) control, thereby reducing output rectification losses. It also has a built-in FluxLink isolation mechanism that provides stable, high-speed feedback to the primary side IC, eliminating the need for slow and unreliable optocouplers. The IC enables control of a variety of burst operating modes, ensuring excellent light and no-load performance while eliminating audio noise and reducing output ripple. In order to ensure high reliability, the IC also provides a very complete fault protection function.

The HiperLCS-2 POWeDIP chipset is priced at $5.39 per piece based on an order quantity of 10,000 pieces. Three reference designs are available for download: the 1650W DC-DC LLC half-bridge resonant converter (DER-1060), the 720W DC-DC LLC half-bridge resonant converter (DER-978), and the 720W PFC LLC power supply with constant voltage and constant current mode control (DER-984).
