ROHM Co., a globally renowned semiconductor manufacturer, EcoGaN with 650V withstand voltage and TOLL packaging from Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as "ROHM") ™ The product GaN HEMT is adopted by Murata Power Solutions, an advanced Japanese electronic component, battery, and power manufacturer, for its AI (artificial intelligence) server power supply. ROHM's GaN HEMT has low loss operation and high-speed switching performance, helping Murata Power Solutions' AI server 5.5kW output power unit achieve miniaturization and high-efficiency operation. It is expected that the power unit will begin mass production in 2025.


In recent years, the volume of data communication has been on a continuous increasing trend globally with the development of AI (Artificial Intelligence) and AR (Augmented Reality) and other developments in the IoT field. Among other things, it is said that a single query using AI consumes several times more power than a regular web search, creating an urgent need for further efficiency improvements in AI server power supplies that power high-speed computing devices and the like that process these queries. On the other hand, GaN devices, which have low on-resistance and high-speed switching characteristics, are attracting attention because they contribute to the high-efficiency operation of power supplies and the miniaturisation of peripheral components such as inductors used in power supply circuits.


We are pleased that the use of Rohm's GaN HEMTs has enabled us to design AI server power supply units with higher efficiencies and higher power densities,’ said Dr Joe Liu, Technical Fellow at Murata Power Solutions. The GaN HEMT's high-speed switching operation, low parasitic capacitance, and zero reverse recovery characteristics minimise the impact on switching losses, increase the operating frequency of the switching converter, and reduce the size of the magnetic components. ROHM's GaN HEMTs are very competitive in terms of performance and reliability, and have been used in our AI server 5.5kW output power supply unit with excellent results. In the future, we will endeavour to improve the efficiency of various power supplies by continuing to work with ROHM, which has significant strengths in the field of power semiconductors, in order to contribute to solving the social issue of tight power supply and demand.’
