TOSHIBA announced that it has begun volume shipments of the SmartMCD family of gate driver ics with embedded microcontrollers (MCUS). The first product "TB9M003FG" is suitable for pumps and pumps, fans and blowers of non-inductive control 3-phase brushless DC motors used in automotive applications.


The TB9M003FG integrates the microcontroller (Arm Cortex-M0), flash memory, power control functions and communication interface functions into the gate driver IC to control and drive the N-channel power MOSFETs in 3-phase brushless DC motors. This integration will reduce system size and component count while enabling advanced and complex motor control in a variety of automotive motor applications. In addition, the new product is also equipped with TOSHIBA's self-developed vector engine, and hardware for non-inductive sine wave control, both to reduce the load on the microcontroller, while reducing the size of the software code.


The reference design "Automobile Body electronic Motor Drive Circuit using SmartMCD" based on TB9M003FG is now available on TOSHIBA's official website.


The expansion of the electric vehicle (xEV) market has led to market demand for electrification, component integration, miniaturization of electronic control units (ECUs) and low noise motors. To meet this need, the new product helps reduce the size of the ECU device by integrating the microcontroller into the gate driver IC and makes the motor quieter by using vector control.
