Device description:

The A4989SLDTR-T is a dual full-bridge gate driver with integrated microstepper converters suitable for driving a wide range of high-power industrial bipolar two-phase stepper motors (typically 30 to 500 W). Motor power is provided by an external n-channel power MOSFETs at a supply voltage of 12 to 50 V.

The device contains two sinusoidal Dacs that generate reference voltages for two independent fixed off-time PWM current controllers that provide current regulation for the external power MOSFET full bridge.

The motor stepper is controlled by a two-wire stepper and directional interface, providing complete microstepper control in full, half, quarter, and sixteen step resolutions. The fixed-break time regulator has the ability to operate in slow, mixed, or fast attenuation modes, resulting in reduced audible motor noise, improved stepping accuracy, and reduced power consumption.

The converter is key to the ease of implementation of the IC. Simply input a pulse on the STEP input to drive the motor one step (full step, half step, quarter or sixteen steps, depending on the microstep selection input). There are no phase sequence tables, high-frequency control lines, or complex programming interfaces. This reduces the need for complex microcontrollers.
