The MLX90316 is a Triaxis® rotational position sensor IC that provides the angular position of a small dipole magnet (shaft-end magnet) rotating above the device surface.
This monolithic device senses the horizontal component of the applied magnetic flux density in a non-contact manner by virtue of the magnetisation collection point (IMC) on its surface.
The unique sensing principle applied by the rotary position sensor ensures a high degree of robustness of the angular position within mechanical (air gap, off-axis) tolerances.
The rotation of this horizontal component is sensed over a wide range (up to 360º - full revolution) and processed by the on-chip DSP (Digital Signal Processing), which ultimately reports the absolute angular position of the magnet as a proportional analogue output, a PWM (Pulse Width Modulation) signal or 14-bit data accessible via a 3-pin SPI (Serial Interface) channel.
The output transmission characteristics are fully programmable (e.g. offset, gain, clamp level, linearity, thermal drift, filtering, range...) The Melexis programming unit PTC-04 communicates with and calibrates the devices exclusively via the connector terminals (Vdd-Vss-Out).
The MLX90316 is targeted for a large number of non-contact rotary position sensor applications common in automotive and industrial systems.
The device is available in both single and dual redundant implementations, enabling a wide range of applications (including safety critical sensing requirements) to be met in a cost effective manner.
