On March 9, Infineon and UMC announced a long-term cooperation agreement for automotive microcontrollers (MCUs) using Infineon's proprietary embedded non-volatile memory (eNVM) technology and manufactured in UMC's Fab 12i facility in Singapore using 40nm process technology.


MCUs are said to be a key component in controlling the functions of a vehicle, and as cars become more environmentally friendly, safe and smart, the demand for MCUs is increasing day by day. This year, Infineon's sales of automotive microcontrollers have climbed to nearly one million units per day. Infineon CEO said, "Through this strategic cooperation agreement, Infineon is able to secure additional long-term capacity supply that can serve Infineon's customers in the fast-growing automotive market."


This long-term supply agreement further strengthens UMC's partnership with Infineon in a number of areas, including automotive, AIoT and 5G, said UMC's Co-General Manager. UMC is currently shipping three times as many automotive electronic chips as it did in 2019.
