According to a report released by TrendForce, sales of flash memory chips (NAND Flash) at Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix (including its subsidiaries) both fell in the third quarter due to weakening demand caused by the economic downturn.

On November 24, Tiburon Consulting (TrendForce) released a report showing that Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix (including its subsidiaries) both saw their sales of flash memory chips (NAND Flash) fall in the third quarter due to weakening demand caused by the economic downturn.


Specifically, Samsung Electronics' sales fell 28.1% from a year ago to US$4.3 billion. Its market share fell by 1.6 percentage points to 31.4 per cent, but it remained the world's top player. In the same period, Japan's Armor Man's market share rose by 5 percentage points to 20.6%, displacing SK Hynix in second place. SK Hynix sales fell by 29.8% to US$2.54 billion and its market share dropped to 18.5%, receding to third place.


According to Tiburon, the NAND Flash market in the third quarter was still not able to withstand the impact of weak demand, with shipments in both the consumer electronics and server sectors falling short of expectations, leading to an 18.3% drop in NAND Flash prices in the third quarter.


In addition, the overall economy continues to be weak, personal and corporate spending has become conservative, and corporate purchasing momentum has also stalled, causing inventory pressure to spread to the original manufacturers and increasing sales pressure.


According to Tibco's statistics, vendor bit shipments decreased by 6.7% YoY in the third quarter, and the average unit price continued to fall. The overall NAND Flash industry revenue was approximately US$13.71 billion, a 24.3% decline YoY.
