ADI (Analog Devices, Inc.), a leading global semiconductor company, recently announced the successful acquisition of Flex Logix, a leader in reconfigurable computing.

Flex Logix, a U.S.-based semiconductor startup, has been focused on providing semiconductor and systems companies with leading-edge embedded field-programmable gate arrays (eFPGAs), digital signal processing/software radio (DSP/SDR) and artificial intelligence (AI) inference solutions since its inception in 2014. Its eFPGA technology enables the seamless integration of FPGA fabrics into System-on-Chips (SoCs) and Application Specific Integrated Circuits (ASICs), dramatically reducing the cost and power consumption of FPGAs and increasing compute density, with significant implications for the communications, networking, data centre and microcontroller sectors.

According to information posted by Flex Logix on its official web page, the company has sold its technology assets to a large publicly traded company and confirmed that this buyer is ADI.An ADI spokesperson said, ‘By acquiring Flex Logix, ADI can significantly enhance our digital portfolio and further support our efforts to help customers solve their most challenging problems.’ While specific terms of the deal were not disclosed, this strategic acquisition will undoubtedly accelerate ADI's leadership in the intelligent edge space.

Gregory Bryant, executive vice president and president of ADI's business unit, welcomed the Flex Logix team to the company in a LinkedIn posting, ‘This team is a leader in eFPGA technology, and they are with us as we continue to lead the Smart Edge journey. eFPGA technology from Flex Logix is the key technology that allows us to build differentiated platforms and help solve our customers' biggest challenges is one of the key building blocks.’

Flex Logix's eFPGA technology not only enables volume FPGA users to integrate FPGAs into their companion SoCs, achieving significant cost and power reductions, but also provides superior compute density and performance. Its scalable DSP/SDR/AI solutions are extremely efficient, delivering higher inference throughput per square millimetre and per watt.Flex Logix supports process nodes ranging from 180 nanometres (nm) to 7nm and is developing 5nm, 3nm and 18A processes.
