On November 2, according to foreign media reports, in order to expand its satellite communications services, Apple (Apple) has invested an additional $1.5 billion in satellite communications service provider partner Globalstar, of which $1.1 billion is direct investment, and it is provided to Globalstar in cash advances in stages. To improve the iPhone's satellite communications and pay another $400 million for a 20% stake in the company.

The new funding will enable Globalstar to purchase new satellites and expand its ground infrastructure. Globalstar currently operates 31 satellites and has ordered up to 26 more to supplement and upgrade its constellation in low Earth orbit.

Apple has been using Globalstar's existing network of 31 L-band satellites since 2022 to enable its latest iphones to access emergency services when terrestrial networks are unavailable. While this space capability includes basic communications functions, low-Earth orbit (LEO) networks do not provide more bandwidth-intensive services such as voice and broadband.

Globalstar said in a regulatory filing that the carrier's commitment to allocate 85 percent of its network capacity to Apple through existing and new satellites remains unchanged after the deal, which is expected to close on Nov. 5. Globalstar also plans to continue using the remaining satellite capacity to support its legacy business, including providing connectivity to remote monitoring and tracking devices.

In the latest development, after Apple agreed to shoulder most of the cost of replenishing the constellation, Globalstar awarded Canada's MDA a $327 million contract to build 17 satellites, with options to buy up to nine additional satellites for $11.4 million each.

Unfortunately, Globalstar declined to comment on what upgrades will be available to iphones with access to its updated Constellation.

Why would Apple invest in Globastar now? Apple's latest Globalstar investment comes as SpaceX, AST SpaceMobile and other companies seek licenses to use cellular spectrum in Space planning Low Earth Orbit (LEO constellation), constellation providers that promise to deliver messaging, voice and broadband satellite services directly to Android phones.
