Apple supply chain analyst Ming-Chi Kuo revealed earlier today that Apple plans to release an updated version of the Vision Pro headset with the M5 chip in 2025, and that Apple has pushed back mass production of a cheaper version of the Vision Pro to ‘beyond 2027’.

Kuo didn't say whether the upgraded Vision Pro will have any other new features or changes from the current model, which launched earlier this year.

In the meantime, Kuo says Apple has delayed production of the Vision Pro's cheaper version ‘beyond 2027,’ which is ‘some time in the past.’ In the U.S., the current Vision Pro starts at $3,499, and such a steep price tag has certainly limited sales.

‘At $3,500, it's not a mass-market product,’ Apple CEO Tim Cook said of the Vision Pro in a recent interview, ’Right now, it's an early adopter product. People who want the technology of tomorrow -- that's who it's aimed at. Fortunately, enough people are in that camp that it's exciting.’

Also in today's Power On newsletter, Bloomberg's Mark Gurman talks about Apple's future plans for the Vision product line.

Like Kuo, Gurman said Apple plans to do a ‘chip upgrade’ for the Vision Pro, but he didn't say whether that would happen in 2025. He also suggested that Apple is continuing to develop a cheaper version of the Vision Pro headset with ‘scaled-down technology,’ but he didn't provide a timeframe for the product's release either.

Gurman also said that Apple is ‘seriously considering’ an eyewear-style device that connects to the iPhone. ‘I also keep hearing that Apple is seriously considering a device that offloads the computing component to the iPhone and acts as an accessory for watching movies,’ he said, adding that it would be similar to the eyewear offered by companies like Xreal. The benefit to Apple is that it would reinforce the iPhone as the centre of its product ecosystem and provide an option that might be more popular than the $3,500 Vision Pro.’
