Single-Pair Ethernet (SPE) solutions are being widely adopted for network connectivity in the automotive and industrial markets due to their system-level advantages in reducing cost, weight, and cable complexity. With proven performance and reliability in automotive applications, SPE is now also being deployed in other areas such as avionics, robotics and automation. For outstanding flexibility and interoperability, Microchip Technology Inc.The LAN887x Ethernet PHY transceiver family was recently announced to further expand the SPE solution. This series of transceivers supports 1000BASE-T1 network speeds from 100 Mbps to 1000 Mbps and cable lengths up to 40 meters, enabling longer transmission distances.
For cross-industry interoperability, Microchip's LAN887x PHY design is fully compliant with IEEE® 802.3bp of the 1000BASE-T1 specification and IEEE 802bw-2015 of the 100BASE-T1 specification. Microchip partnered with the University of New Hampshire Interoperability Laboratory (UNH-IOL) to create the 1000BASE-T1 conformance Development Testbed. For many automotive and industrial applications that operate in harsh environments and need to withstand extreme temperatures, these devices also meet ISO 26262 functional safety requirements under the ASIL B classification.
These devices offer advanced diagnostic capabilities, including cable fault detection, signal quality indicators, link outages and failures, built-in self-tests, and temperature and voltage monitoring to improve reliability. In order to flexibly respond to the different connection requirements of end applications, the LAN887x PHY supports Class A operation with cable lengths up to 15 meters and Class B operation with cable lengths up to 40 meters. Both operation types include four in-line connectors.
The LAN887x is a low-power solution using EtherGREEN™ technology for improved energy efficiency. The OPEN Alliance TC10 sleep and wake features provide additional power savings, with up to 16 µA in standby power for extended operating time in battery-powered applications. The optional integrated linear regulator reduces the number of components in the design, optimising BOM costs.
Charles Forni, vice president of Microchip's USB and Networking business unit, said: "Our comprehensive solution includes PHY transceivers, bridging devices, switches and development boards, making it easier for designers to deploy single-pair Ethernet technology in their designs. "Low-power sleep, extended cable coverage capabilities and functional safety support make our LAN887x devices a versatile and powerful solution that continues to support our customers' expanding network needs."
The LAN887x PHY is compatible with Microchip's portfolio of microcontrollers (MCUS), microprocessors (MPUs), system-on-chip (SoC) devices and Ethernet switches. Microchip offers an increasingly broad range of SPE solutions, including PHYs, controllers, and switches that support data transfer speeds from 10 Mbps to 1,000 Mbps.
The LAN8870, LAN8871 and LAN8872 are now in production. For more information, please visit www.microchipdirect.com.
