SAMSUNG recently announced that the highest performance and largest capacity PCIe 5.0 SSD, PM9E1, has officially begun mass production. The PM9E1 delivers superior performance and increased energy efficiency with its self-developed 5-nanometer (nm) controller and eighth-generation V-NAND (V8) technology, making it the preferred solution for end-side AI PCS. Compared to the previous generation PM9A1a, the PM9E1 offers significant improvements in key SSD features such as performance, storage capacity, energy efficiency and security.

Thanks to the PCIe 5.0 interface and eight-channel design, the sequential read/write speed of the new SSD has more than tripled compared to the previous generation, up to 14.5GB/s(gigabits per second) and 13GB/s, respectively. This powerful performance makes data transfer faster and can meet the needs of data-intensive AI applications, even 14GB large language model (LLM) can be transferred from SSD to DRAM in less than a second.

The PM9E1 is available in a variety of storage sizes, including 512GB, 1TB, 2TB, and 4TB. The 4TB specification is particularly suitable for PC (personal computer) users who require high capacity storage, capable of storing large files such as AI-generated content, large data programs and high-resolution videos, as well as meeting the storage needs of high-load tasks such as gaming.

In addition, the energy efficiency of PM9E1 is improved by more than 50%, and the significantly improved energy efficiency enhances battery life, making it ideal for end-to-side AI applications.

To enhance security measures, SAMSUNG's PM9E1 uses the Security Protocol and Data Model (SPDM) v1.2 specification. SPDM includes technologies such as "secure Channel", "Device authentication" and "Firmware tampering authentication" to help prevent supply chain attacks in production or distribution and prevent stored data from being falsified or tampered with.

The PM9E1 is the beginning of SAMSUNG's global PC manufacturer promotion plan for advanced SSD products, and in the future, SAMSUNG is expected to launch consumer products based on PCIe 5.0 to consolidate its market position in the end-to-end artificial intelligence market.
