On 24 September, Samsung Electronics announced that it has successfully developed its first PCIe 4.0 in-vehicle solid state drive (SSD), the AM9C1, based on eighth-generation V-NAND technology.


According to Samsung Electronics, the AM9C1 is approximately 50 per cent more energy efficient than its predecessor, the AM991. In terms of sequential read and write speeds, the AM9C1 achieves an outstanding performance of 4,400MB/s and 400MB/s, respectively. These technical enhancements enable the AM9C1 to meet the demand for high-performance storage solutions for modern automotive electronic systems.


In terms of technical details, the AM9C1 adopts Samsung's 5nm main control chip and supports users to switch from TLC (Multi-Layer Cell) state to SLC (Single-Layer Cell) mode. In this mode, the AM9C1 can reach read speeds of up to 4,700MB/s and write speeds of up to 1,400MB/s. Meanwhile, the SLC mode also brings enhanced SSD reliability, providing users with higher data security.


Samsung's key partners are currently conducting sample testing of the 256GB version of the AM9C1. Mass production of this product is expected to begin by the end of this year to meet the market's urgent demand for high-performance in-vehicle SSDs. In addition, Samsung plans to launch AM9C1 products in a variety of capacity sizes ranging from 128GB to 2TB to meet the needs of different users. Among them, the 2TB SSD is expected to start mass production early next year.
